We are continuing to put on extra buses to keep up with demand and as the system beds in we are confident the service on our luxury buses will go from strength to strength.”

Dear All
Following yesterdays Busway Project Board (PB) meeting we now have an opening date for the Busway, it will be either 23 or 24 September to combine with the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) event being held at Luton. The plan is to get a Minister down for that event and open the Busway, depending which day he/she can make will depend on the opening date.

FACTS AND FIGURES:
Busway News Desk commented on their own photo.
The Busway is 13.4km long including 7.4km of guided track, 2.4km unguided and 3.6km on highway (including sections of bus lanes) running between Houghton Regis, Dunstable, Luton and London Luton Airport. It will be the second longest Busway in the world (and the longest urban busway). Cambridge is currently the longest - but mainly rural - and the Adelaide O-Bahn Busway in Adelaide, South Australia is the third longest.
Cycle lanes are included along the main Busway between Blackburn Road in Houghton Regis and the M1 bridge, then extending on into Luton. High profile stops with real time passenger information will be on the main Busway and at key locations in the town centres and Luton Dunstable Hospital.
As part of the scheme approximately 250 new and existing bus stops throughout the conurbation will be improved to provide level boarding and real time passenger information.

Why a Busway and not a railway?
There was a public inquiry back in 2005 that went into detail on this. The case was made and supported by the inspector that using buses provided the most flexible and cost effective solution.
How fast will it be?
The Busway is able to travel at speeds of 50mph on unrestricted sections reducing , to 30mph by bus stops and crossing points
How much will it cost to travel on the Busway?
While the Busway will be owned and maintained by the local authorities the services will be provided by the bus operators at the going rate.

Transmission 2013
This sculpture celebrates the rich manufacturing heritage of Houghton Regis and Dunstable – the very reason why many families relocated here from London. The cog is a symbol of the engineering that the area was so proud of, with its car industry and well as many other manufacturing industries. Two or more cogs working in tandem are called a transmission as two meshing cogs transmit rotational motion. The cogs are also found on Houghton Regis town crest.
The sculpture was designed by Artist Pete Moorhouse. Ideas were informed by community consultation and workshops with several local schools; St Georges, Icknield Lower School, King’s Houghton Middle School and Central Bedfordshire College.

Cllr Nigel Young, Executive Member for Sustainable Communities (Strategic Planning and Economic Development), said:"The Luton Dunstable Busway is far more flexible than rail could ever be, and quicker and more reliable than conventional bus services, which makes it absolutely the best way to travel between Houghton Regis, Dunstable and Luton. "The great benefits are faster journey times and improved connections for businesses, from as early as 5.30am until late on week days. We’ve been able to deliver four great routes and ensure that the Busway will open up a wealth of opportunities for hassle-free journeys to work, college, shopping, the theatre or just catching up with friends. It also has much wider benefits for the economic regeneration of the area, with businesses already saying that the Busway opens up new opportunities for them.” There are more than 150 upgraded busstops between and along the guided and road sections of the busway. Buses will stop at key locations in Dunstable town centre, such as outside the Winston Churchill and Asda. Services extend to the Downside and Beecroft estates in the town,as well as running from Toddington in via Houghton Regis' Parkside estate and town centre.

By having it as a guided bus way allows the buses to pass each other in opposite directions at speed whilst having little separation from each other. Whilst a buses only road would have had greater versatility, you would either have to drop the speed limit or make the road wider so the buses can pass each other safely at speed. The latter would have involved sacrificing the shared pedestrian/cycle path and/or encroaching into people's properties/existing roads/countryside.

NEWS RELEASE FROM CBC :Travel advisors in Toddington
Travel Advisors are on the streets of Toddington assisting residents to plan their journeys and helping them keep fit and save money as a result.
The Travel Advisors are part of Central Bedfordshire Council's Travel Choices project, a sustainable travel and transport project for Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, Houghton Regis. It aims to improve travel to employment and education by offering better and informed choices. The team have covered Dunstable and Houghton Regis and are now branching out to Toddington after the successful launch of the Luton Dunstable Busway, which Toddington bus routes feed into.
Advisors will be knocking on doors to talk to people about their travel patterns and needs. They can then give tailored information and advice to show people the different options for travel, which they may not know about. They will also be promoting the improved E service from Toddington to Luton, which uses the Busway, and the new community 74 service which creates a better link to Central Bedfordshire College and the University Technical College in Houghton Regis.
All Travel Advisors are specially trained to offer this advice in a clear and sensitive way. For more information on them and the Travel Choices project, visit www.cbtravelchoices.co.uk or follow news on www.facebook.com/travelchoices

Another comment on Dont Let Dunstable Die FB Page says " Think people should get facts straight, the driver was hurt n taken to hospital cos some prat tried overtaking him on hatters way and smashed into him which caused him to hurtle onto busway! " - Whatever the facts are let's not jump to conclusions.

The only road a SatNav may direct someone down is the road running past Luton Railway station (Station Road) as this used to be accessible to all vehicles. There are no guideways on that section - its just a buses only road. The guideways are on what used to be the railway line, which was never a road, so a Sat Nav shouldn't be directing people onto the guideway.

NOT HRTC. Assumption is Arriva. Card comes with an Arriva leaflet promoting the use of the Connect card. Blurb says: "No more paper tickets, No rooting around for change every time you want to ride the bus, More security - register your connect Arriva Connect Card and if you have to report it lost or stolen any tickets you've preloaded on it will be protected, Topping up is easy too - add more journeys onboard our buses or at our travel shop in Luton."

Whilst there was no bus way when people purchased their houses, it was a disused railway line with plans to do something with it. If we had no bus way then we may have eventually had a railway of some kind even if it were a heritage line which was proposed by a heritage group. Either way, it weren't going to remain a disused railway forever.

And here it is .... "New route announced as busway breaks through the million passenger mark.
A new service using the Luton Dunstable Busway has been announced today alongside confirmation that more than a million passenger journeys were made during its first nine months of operation.
Reporting patronage figures up to and including quarter three, Luton Borough and Central Bedfordshire Councils, together with the three bus operators Arriva, Centrebus and Grant Palmer, revealed that just under 1,040,000 passenger journeys were undertaken on the busway’s four core
routes up to the end of June 2014.
With the first anniversary of operations now fast approaching, Arriva has announced a new hourly F70 service using the guideway will begin on 2 November, saving up to half-an-hour on journey times between Luton, Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard and Milton Keynes.
“I am absolutely delighted with this indication of the busway’s encouraging strong performance during its first year of operation,” said Cllr Dave Taylor, Luton Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for environment, “and it comes as no surprise to hear of this new route being confirmed and of Arriva’s confidence in the infrastructure.
“The popularity of the busway is undoubtedly the biggest single reason why we have seen the total number of passengers boarding buses grow by around six per cent in central Luton and nine per cent in Dunstable and Houghton Regis town centres this year.
“The evidence is that both the busway and its shared-use path are also delivering significant modal shift by supporting an increasing number of journeys undertaken by sustainable transport instead of by car.”
Although detailed patronage data is confidential information to the individual bus operators, it can be confirmed that 346,854 passenger journeys were registered in quarter one from 1 October to 31 December, 338,810 in quarter two from 1 January to 31 March, and 351,625 from 1 April to 30 June.
Services on the Luton Dunstable Busway began on 25 September 2013, with four initial routes providing core services between Luton and Dunstable up to every eight minutes at peak times, travelling on the guideway at speeds of up to 50mph and linking the two town centres in just 15 minutes.
The figures confirm Arriva’s A service is the most used route, with up to four buses an hour each way linking Parkside in Houghton Regis with London Luton Airport via Dunstable and Luton Station Interchange in around 25 minutes.
Two routes operated by Centrebus, the B service from Downside estate in Dunstable to Luton Station Interchange, and the E service from Toddington Green to Luton Galaxy Centre via Dunstable, and Grant Palmer’s C service from Beecroft estate in Dunstable to Luton Station Interchange, are also popular.
Cllr Nigel Young, Executive Member for Sustainable Communities at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: ““I’m really encouraged by the success of the busway, testament to the genuine improvement it has made to travel between Dunstable and Luton. The new service is particularly welcome, providing Leighton Buzzard residents with a greater choice of transport options for their local journeys”.
Arriva’s new fast F70 service will run alongside its traditional 70 route, which will now also become an hourly service. The projected journey time saving between Luton and Milton Keynes is up to 30 minutes in each direction.
Linsey Frostick, regional marketing manager for Arriva, said: “We are delighted with the first year of the busway, and we have received some excellent feedback from customers who have shifted to using the busway instead of another bus route, and from those who have switched from the car.
“Quick, congestion-free and linking the whole conurbation, the A service’s growth has been extremely good.
“Since 31 August we have also introduced more frequent early-morning and late-evening buses on the route offering further benefits to passengers travelling to work and for leisure.”
David Shelley, commercial director at Centrebus, said: “We have continued to see patronage growth on our B and E services through the summer, with our Carbonara smartcard scheme proving particularly popular, so we are very positive about the future.”

John - the bus at the back was out of service as the driver had finished his shift and was returning the bus back to the depot - he wanted to get home. The other drivers had already suffered disruption due to the earlier march in Luton and would have to cut their breaks short as well as enduring angry passengers complaining about the buses being late.
Busway News Desk commented on their own post.
I didn't ask the driver but one of the bus drivers said he was looking at his Sat Nav. The only way I think this can happen is if they start their journey on Hitchin Road, Luton and an old Sat Nav tells them to drive past the station (which is now buses only). If they carry on driving straight without paying any attention (even to their Sat Nav telling them to turn left/right onto Guildford Street or New Bedford Road) then I guess they could end up on the bus way but you're right - how on earth do they end up driving on something that doesn't bear any resemblance to a normal road?

There is to be a reduction in the Centrebus 'E' service, which currently runs through Houghton Regis to Luton on the busway. The new service will run hourly (instead of half hourly as it is now). However, Saturday service will cease altogether.
